IVF Injection

IVF Injection

Why is IVF based on injections?

Injectables are a crucial part of the IVF treatment protocol. IVF requires injections to stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs, trigger ovulation, and thin the uterine lining to prevent issues like implantation, just as other infertility treatments require oral medication administration.

Generally, 1-2 injections are given daily to the patients, depending on the treatment plan chosen by the patient.

Types of IVF injection

IVF injections are available in different forms, and each one of them has a specific function in the treatment process. IVF shots are given either subcutaneously (injected beneath the skin) or intra-muscularly (injected into the muscle tissue).

Different types of injections are given at different stages of treatment. Let’s examine the most popular IVF injections and their functions:

1. Follicle-stimulating hormone injections: These injections are used to stimulate the maturation and growth of multiple follicles in the ovaries, and this injection can be self-administered by patients daily for about 8–12 days. When FSH alone is not enough, then this is given in combination with LH (luteinizing hormone) to support growth and maturation.

2. Progesterone Injections: Ovaries produce progesterone naturally, but at the time of IVF, it is given to support pregnancy. Progesterone injections are given after the process of egg retrieval and fertilisation is completed for the thinning of the lining of the uterus to support implantation.

3. Comparison of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormonal (GnRH) Antagonists and Agonists: The only distinction between these two hormones is that GnRH agonists act faster and are given closer to the time of ovulation to prevent premature ovulation.

4. HCG injection: This injection plays an important role during embryo transfer. After injecting, these chances of implantation are enhanced, and it also provides a nurturing environment for the growth of the foetus.

Advantages and Disadvantages of IVF injection:

As we have gone through different IVF injections and their role in each stage, it is crucial to understand the pros and cons of the shots.

Advantages of IVF injections: The key advantage of IVF injections is that they help in successful implantation and prevent pre-mature ovulation, and this is in the complete control of the doctor.

Disadvantages of IVF injections: Although IVF injections are completely safe and reliable, patients might suffer from some common side effects, which include swelling and bruising at the site of injection, redness, itching, etc.

Conclusion:

IVF injections bring a ray of hope for couples facing infertility issues. They play a very important role in the successful completion of the IVF cycle. With the advancement of technology, the concept of IVF injection is continuously evolving, aiming to provide new hope to those struggling to become parents.
