Almost every couple dreams of having a child of their own, but infertility puts a break and jeopardises the dream of parenthood. However, with the modern tech advances like Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), even infertility cannot stop you from having your biological child. One of these techniques is Surrogacy.

Not only for infertility, surrogacy can also help a same-sex couple or single parent to have their child. Gestational surrogacy allows the intended parents to have a biological connection with their baby, because through IVF, the surrogate is usually injected with the embryo formed from the egg and sperm of the intended parents. Surrogacy is most likely to be successful, as the surrogate is properly tested before insemination, and has a proven record of healthy pregnancies.

Usually used as the last alternative, surrogacy is an emotional and physically demanding process. It is a rapidly growing process, an arrangement between intended parents and surrogate, in which the surrogate mother agrees to carry a baby for the intended parents and then gives the baby to them once it is born. It helps in completing families, and the surrogate mother gets a deep sense of satisfaction and joy that she is the one who made it possible and also gets a fair compensation.

Even if the intended parents could not experience pregnancy themselves, they can still be there during all the milestones in the surrogate’s pregnancy like – ultrasounds, feeling the baby move and at the time of birth. All the parties involved (intended parents and surrogate) are legally protected under a legal agreement signed before the surrogacy procedure is initiated. It states that once the baby is born, the surrogate mother has no right over it and is not responsible for the baby any further.

Surrogacy might be a tough journey but the satisfactory end result makes the struggle worth it.

What happens during surrogacy?

  • Including the nine months of pregnancy, surrogacy is a process of 11 months. The first two months are all about retrieving the eggs from the intended mother, in the case of self eggs. For this, she is given injections for ovarian stimulation for about 10 days.during this time, the surrogate mother is also chosen after proper screening and background check.
  • Once the eggs are retrieved, the sperm from the intended father are also taken. They both are fertilized in a lab to form embryos. The couple can also opt for donor eggs, sperm or embryos.
  • These embryos are then implanted in the uterus of the surrogate mother. This process is known as in vitro fertilization (IVF). After a week and half, the surrogate  mother is tested to check if she has conceived or not. This is done by checking the heartbeat of the baby. If she isn’t pregnant, IVF is repeated again. Once pregnancy is confirmed, the first stage of pregnancy begins.
  • During pregnancy, the surrogate mother is well taken care of and is called for regular check-ups and ultrasound, during which the intended parents are also present.
  • After 9 months, when the term of pregnancy comes to an end, when the child is born, it is given to the intended parents.
