ICSI benefits?

ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is super helpful for couples facing male infertility issues. One of the biggest benefits is that even if the sperm count is very low or the sperm can’t swim well, doctors can still inject a single healthy sperm directly into the egg. This gives a better chance of fertilization, especially when regular IVF might not work.
Other benefits include:

  • It helps when the male has had a vasectomy or blockage.
  • Works well when sperm need to be retrieved surgically.
  • It’s also useful if there have been failed IVF attempts before.
  • Can be helpful when using frozen or donor sperm, or if the eggs have a thick outer shell.
Basically, it gives more hope to couples who were struggling to get results through regular IVF.
UK's NHS (National Health Service) explain ICSI in a simple and trustworthy way: https://www.uhcw.nhs.uk/ivf/treatments/icsi/

1. Improved Fertilization Rates—Especially for Male Factor InfertilityIn cases of low sperm count (oligospermia), poor sperm motility, or abnormal morphology, ICSI dramatically increases the odds of successful fertilization by selecting and injecting a single healthy sperm.

2. Prevents Total Fertilization Failure (TFF)-Meta‑analysis of unexplained infertility trials found that ICSI reduced risk of total fertilization failure (TFF) with a relative risk (RR) of ~8.2. That means treating just five cycles with ICSI can prevent one case of TFF

3. Effective When Eggs or Sperm Are Limiteddeal when only a small number of eggs are retrieved or limited/poor-quality sperm is available (e.g., surgically retrieved, frozen sperm, post-vasectomy)

4. Supports Genetic Testing and Special Cases-Used when preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is planned to avoid contamination from multiple sperm. Recommended for frozen or thawed eggs/sperm, which may have reduced fertilization competence (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8094272/)
