Dr. Pramod Kumar Sharma, our chairman, is one of the pioneers of IVF treatment in east India and one of its most successful practitioners. He established the Pratiksha hospital Guwahati, the Pratiksha group’s first hospital in 1995. He delivered the group’s first IVF baby on 13th February 1997 and was also the first in East India to deliver a test tube baby successfully from a frozen embryo. Dr. Sharma earned a Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Assam Medical College in the year 1986 and completed his Post Graduation from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Guwahati Medical College in the year 1990. He also holds the following additional qualifications:
He has been a pioneer in developing minimally invasive surgery in this part of the country and has conducted several workshops in numerous remote areas of the northeastern region and has trained young gynecologist s in the field which has helped in reducing the problem of human infertility in the respective regions and the northeast as a whole. Way back in 1997, with the motive of popularizing total lap hysterectomy Dr. Sharma had conducted an Indo-Australian workshop at Jorhat in collaboration with Prof. Peter Maher, which was attended by many gynecologists from the northeastern region as well as other parts of India. During his service, he even developed a team of gynecologists, Embryologists, Laparoscopic surgeons and also felt that the need of the hour in the region was to develop a center dedicated to Women and Child care.
Thus in the year 2007, he established the landmark achievement of his career, “PRATIKSHA” a 50 bedded hospital specialized in In-vitro fertilization, Minimal invasive surgery, and neonatal care. The IVF center of the hospital attracted patients not only from the north-eastern region but also from the rest of the country and abroad. Hence, the concept of Reproductive tourism was materialized, which did not seem like a realistic goal, till a few decades back, at least not in the context of the region. Today PRATIKSHA hospital does around 1000 to 1200 cycles of IVF annually with a success rate of 40 - 60% and is considered as one of the most successful centers in India. In 2008 he delivered the first surrogate baby of the northeast for an NRI couple.
In 2009 the first baby through the method of Frozen Blast cyst Transfer was born, under Dr.Sharma’s initiative. Dr. Sharma knew that a baby is the ultimate source of happiness for any woman as motherhood is inherent in all women and it is the most beautiful feeling in the universe. But high neonatal mortality rates due to intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), preterm delivery, premature low birth weight, multiple pregnancies were obstacles to this human desire; hence to overcome this he established a fully equipped advanced neonatal care unit which is manned by a very efficient team of doctors and nurses. This unit has successfully saved many highly premature babies as early as 28 weeks weighing as less as 600gms. It also has the facility of safely transferring unhealthy babies from the periphery.
